the Little Dancer by Degas

critics / They’re not as smart as they think they are.

The plaque at the museum says when Degas entered his wax model for this piece in the exhibition, the critics hated it. They complained about its’  “ugliness and depravity”.

He had it cast anyway, and we are lucky to have one. Because it’s the most loved work by Degas these days.
They liked his paintings and they wanted him to stick to painting. They were used to seeing refined figurative sculptures, and this looked rough to them.
This is why it’s important for artists not to tke the critics too seriously, and to make exactly what they want to make. Never let anyone tell you what not to do, because the critics haven’t wised up at all since then.
