Deepwater Sponger by Charles Ponticello

Is this a joke or what ? Cause I don't get it.

It’s in Richmond at Rocketts Landing. That’s the James River, which isn’t very deep. This should be at 85 thousand feet. When I took this shot a couple with a golden retriever walked past and the dog barked at the bronze. I said to the dog, ” Yeah, it’s pretty bad, isn’t it ?” And the dog turned around and barked again ! ha ha.Good thing I don’t live there, or I’d never stop complaining about it.Maybe they can try  again and reuse the bronze. What do you think ?

A monument to a faceless cog in the machine? It is a remarkably stupid and ugly piece of public sculpture.

      hi Mark.
Thanks for your right on interpretation of Deepwater Sponger. I didn’t realize it before. You are probably right about it being a monument to the faceless cog in the machine. It seems mean to the faceless cogs. I put up a post to the unknown workers, The Headman, by Paul Di Pasquale, that is good to look at.

What does the partial saying that’s in concrete in the ground in front of the statue mean?

Hi Susan, I think the saying carved in the concrete is a communication between the sponger and his boat. The text at the sculpture in caps, my interpretation in ( ). But I’m not exactly sure .

LOG BOOK 21 988884 DATE AUG 9TH 2042 (some time in the future ) JOHN DO YOU READ ME B8111 DO YOU READ ME WE ARE AT 85 THOUSAND FEET WE ARE LOOKING AT MAYBE 3 – 5000 GALLONS ( are you recieving this communication ? I’m at the bottom of the ocean. There’s this huge volume of sponges down here . ) LOOKS LIKE H2O! ( water ) NOT SURE IF WE —— ANY FARTHER HITTING SOME SERIOUS ROCK DOWN HERE SPONGER SHOWING SIGNS OF STRESS ( it’s probably hard for a human body to stay alive with the weight of that much water ) SEND DOWN A SPUNKER ITS DAMN VISCOUS ( he’s asking for a piece of equipment to help him see in the murky depths ) BUT WE CAN PROBABLY PULL —–

the concrete is partially broken. I put — in where letters are missing.
