Autumn Fruit and Flowers by Lilian Westcott Hale

graphite and charcoal on cream colored paper

The VMFA just bought 3 great American works thanks to the generous Cochran contribution. All 3 are beautiful. I’m showing this one because it’s a masterpiece in drawing technique. There’s an atmospheric quality.  She was an Impressionist from the Boston School. This drawing is an interior of her house in Dedham Massachusetts showing family heirlooms with silver and furniture. The picture on the mantle is a needlepoint “mourning” sampler. The pyramid reminds me of Hollywood Cemetery, but it’s not the same. Her drawing shows a light feminine and refined touch. I hope it inspires more artists to go for the pencils and charcoal. Great pick by the VMFA .

Lilian (one L is standard) was born 12/07/1880 in Bridgeport CT with the name
“Lillie Coleman Westcott” according to Bridgeport archival records.
The same 12/07/1880 date can be found on the 1900 Federal census
(ancestry.com) as well as on her gravesite (fineagrave.com).
