The Life Line by Winslow Homer

at the Philadelphia Museum of Art till the end of Dec.

America’s greatest maritime artist mastered painting the figure and the sea.

Winslow Homer painted at Gloucester Mass. , Prouts Neck ME. , and Cullercoats England.

This painting shows equipment called the breeches buoy when it was just invented. Here’s a man and woman who don’t know each other , in a life or death situation. She fakes a faint because it’s socially awkward. She’s beautiful, but her unknown rescuer isn’t looking at her drenched and ripped dress.
