Wreck of The Atlantic by Winslow Homer

also known as ” Cast up by the Sea ” / wood engraving / 1873

In the 1800s ship traffic picked up across the Atlantic. So many ships wrecked just off the coast, thousands of people died.

This was published in Harpers Weekly , and really made the public aware of the problem. The drawing is so strong that it inspired the cry ” Women and children first ! ”

That’s when the first life saving groups were organized in the coastal communities.
