The Judgement of Paris / Francois Fabre / VMFA

1766 - 1837

1766 – 1837

Here’s the story, if I remember it right. Paris, the trouble maker, put an apple in the garden where the goddesses hang around. He wrote on the apple. ( to the most beautiful ) . So then he had to decide which goddess was the most beautiful. Before that, they all got along . The goddesses Athena and Hera offered Paris riches or wisdom if he picked them. And the goddess of love, Aphrodite, offered Paris the love of the most beautiful woman in the world if he picked her as most beautiful goddess. Paris took Aphrodite’s bribe and named her most beautiful. Guess it didn’t hurt her cause that her clothes are falling off. 🙂

The most beautiful woman in the world was Helen of Troy. So Paris kidnaps Helen, or she ran away with him. But she was married to someone else. And that started the Trojan War.

This painting was done in the Neoclassical style. Fabre’s teacher was Jaques Louis David. And the plaque says the composition is from a Raphael design.
