underpainting for water lilies

underpainting water liliesThe Conservatory is a white building so I planned to use shades of gray. To make it look bright I used the opposite color in my underpainting from the gray I wanted to put on top.

I planned to put a warm gray in the parts of the building that were in the sun and a cool gray in the shadows. So I started my underpainting with a cool gray in the sunlit areas and a warm gray in the shadows. That way when I painted the layer of glazes on top of this it made the gray seem brighter and the conservatory seems white.
