My dear departed friend, Dick Clayman, (artist, genius, gentleman, died 2001) was my source for information. He was a historian and researcher among his many interests. I was a young chick and he was an old man. Dick tried to impart his wisdom to me. He lectured me constantly on art, history, politics and religion. And the Opera. But his favorite subject was the Civil War.
Once I asked Dick, “Was the Civil War about freeing the slaves or was it about politics?” He told me the answer depends on who you ask. He told me those Yankee boys wouldn’t have left their farms to fight for some political reason. They were fighting to free the slaves.
