Is There A Skill You’d Like To Master?

The Paris Sewed Story Up

Paris Sewed Up – Digital Collage

Ah…Paris in the Springtime. And Spring is such a dreamy Season…finally being able to shake off the cold Winter weather and opening the doors to warmer sweet breezes.

The next challenge for the Lunagirl Moonbeam Design Team is “Sewing”.  I do appreciate the talent of anyone who can sew. Although my Mom is an excellent seamstress, it was a skill I never mastered.

When looking through the beautiful Lunagirl images, the woman with the wistful smile appealed to me.  When I think about sewing, this is how I feel. I am ever hopeful that someday I will go beyond my very skillful button replacement sewing and hem stitching upping. So when I think of sewing thoughts run to Fashion and Fashion comes home to Paris.

I wanted the woman to take center stage in the work. From my own digital ephemera collection I started the piece with a postcard of the Eiffel Tower with postage stamp. I added pattern paper complete with directions. And a dream isn’t a dream unless you have a limitless sky surrounding you. I finished the collage with the joyfully optimistic yellow roses…perhaps a symbol of her future in Fashion Design!

I guess my sewing dreams will continue. What skill would you like to master?

I made shelves out of cardboard and draped them with fabric I like. They’re in gallery 140 at Artworks on Hull St. just a few blocks south of the 14th St. bridge. We have a great collection of art in there.

how to be creative

how to be creative

When an art critic turns up their nose and says “It’s been done before.” you can ignore anything else they say because that person isn’t thinking clearly.

To be creative you have to remember something you learned in the past and combine it with something else. Then you have something new.

I didn’t invent embroidering mirrors on fabric. I didn’t invent using wire and innerfacing to make fabric hold a shape. I only had to find things I like and put them together, then ask “ok, What is this thing I made?” And people think I’m creative but I never invented anything in my life. This is why it’s important to learn from the masters if you want to be a great artist. They can teach you what works. Then you get better results because you have knowledge and experience to draw from.

Little Demon Pillows

The weather is nice today but they say the heat and humidity will be back next week. I’ve been sewing more this year than I did in the past 10 years because of the extreme weather. In the winter when it was too snowy and icy to go out to draw I worked on my slipcovers. Now I’m sewing pillows because I can’t take the heat. I might have to force myself to go out in the heat to draw soon because it gets boring working at home. We could have 8 more weeks of the heat and humidity here, with little breaks of good weather like today. So your plein air artist is sewing at home again. I hope you enjoy the little demons. I entered them at the Henry St. Gallery. Opening night was postponed till July 11 because the 4th of July celebrations conflicted with 1st Fri. art opening night.

This is my 2014 contribution to the feminist art movement.

This is my 2014 contribution to the feminist art movement.

In the early days of the “Women’s Lib” movement I was as wild and free as a flower child could be.

When Shelby and I were in school at York Academy of Art the National Organization of Women had a meeting in York and we went to hear what they had to say. We both laughed when we left the meeting because neither one of us wanted to pay to join NOW. We thought they should let us join for free because we were both already liberated women. Or better yet, they should give us some money.

Over the years I’ve seen some “feminist art” and I wondered why they made such a big deal over it because it seems weak to me. Why do feminists represent the female figure so ugly? Why do they demand you say all women are beautiful? If it was male beauty in question would men feel better about themselves if women said all men are beautiful?

Looking back, I can’t tell if the women’s movement had any effect on my life or not. If I wasn’t a liberated woman would my life have been better or worse? At this stage in my life I am the most free and liberated woman in the world, but I don’t know anything with any certainty about feminism so I can’t debate the subject. I’m very thankful for my freedom but I give the credit for it to great men, not women’s lib.

If you have insight on the subject of feminism and art please feel free to weigh in and I’ll post it.

I don’t know if feminists would like my pillows or not. Do feminists have a sense of humor?

I can customize these pillows by embroidering yo Mamma’s tattoos on them for an additional charge. What? Yo Mamma didn’t tell you she got ink? hahahahahaha

Lets talk about art, food and multiculturalism.

Lets talk about art, food and multiculturalism.

My inspiration came from my book “The Maya” by Michael D. Coe. I learned so much from that book and the art is great.

Sometimes artists say they don’t know what to do next and their friends tell them to do what you like, do what you know. I’d say it’s more fun to do something foreign to you. Look outside your own life for inspiration.

You don’t have to be Mexican to like tacos and make your own tacos. You don’t have to be PA. Dutch to draw hex signs. If I saw an artist of another race drawing hex signs would I say “You can’t do that because you’re not PA. Dutch.”? NO! I’d be hoping their next project would be a Shoo Fly Pie. It’s true the best steak sandwiches are in Southeast PA. But they make some here that aren’t bad.

Artists, you don’t have to be 100% true to the style you want to use. Take the elements you like and make them your own. Experimentation and exploration are much more rewarding than doing the same thing over and over again. Don’t fear the multicultural community. Use it.

I’m entering this sculpture at the Henry St. Gallery in Richmond VA. in July. The theme is Gods and Goddesses. Opening night is the 1st Fri. in July. Come on down and see the new god in person.

It’s not easy to write about the PA. Dutch because it’s a complicated mix of religion and superstition. I’m from a PA. Dutch family but my childhood experiences might not be typical. I don’t know for sure, I left Ephrata long ago. I’m not religious or superstitious. I always liked to draw hex signs because it’s fun to spin a compass around and make a perfect circle and divide it up into a nice star then decorate it. I’ll tell you a little story I remember and if I’m wrong, please feel free to correct me as I’m not a fact checking person.

Pennsylvania was the most free of the 13 colonies because William Penn was a Quaker. William Penn’s family had a high rank in the Church Of England and they were embarrassed because they thought the Quakers were a cult. So they put William Penn in charge of this huge chunk of woods they named Pennsylvania to get him out of England. Penn said there would be ABSOLUTE freedom of religion in PA.

No witches got killed in PA until 1968. A guy living out in the country in York County accused his neighbor of hexing him and shot him. I think the Wiccan who got killed was named Rehmeyer.

A hex sign on a barn is a good thing but a witch hexing someone is bad. A witch hexed me here in VA. and I didn’t find out about it till years later. I had a good laugh about it. It’s a long story.

PA. is a little peculiar in that the PA. Dutch are non confrontational. If they don’t approve of your lifestyle they will shun you. Shunning is ignoring. If you’re from N.Y. or N.J. you might have to listen to some verbal abuse if you don’t fit in, but in PA. they just want you to go away. Shunning might sound harsh but being persecuted would be much worse. And there are so many witches there that it’s easy for them to find each other.

Now the times they are a changing. People move into Lancaster Co. from far away, and people who grew up there move out. The PA. Dutch are finding it more difficult to avoid the modern world.
